Searching for a travel destination that will leave you spellbound with its rich cultural heritage? Look no further than Udaipur, the captivating city nestled in the heart of Rajasthan. The volunteers at STEP Beyond Borders embarked on a weekend trip to this beautiful city which exceeded all their expectations.
Our adventure began as we stepped into the city, greeted by vibrant colours, and melodious sounds of traditional music. Our first step was the iconic City Palace, a majestic architectural marvel that left us in awe with its intricate carvings, and ornate balconies. Construction of the palace began in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II who is also known as the founder of Udaipur. The palace served as the residence of the Mewar rulers and witnessed many significant events in the region’s history. As we wandered through the palace’s grand halls and courtyards, the volunteers were spellbound by the grandeur of the Mewar dynasty, their expressions a delightful mix of wonder and admiration. You don’t want to miss the City Palace museum, showcasing artefacts and treasures from centuries past. You can also step aboard a boat and cruise past the Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace.
As we strolled through the garden’s pathways, we were captivated by the serene surroundings and the intricate design of the fountains and water channels. The lotus pool was especially mesmerizing, with its crystal-clear waters reflecting the vibrant colours of the surrounding flora. We also had the opportunity to witness the traditional puppet show, which added to the overall charm of the garden.
Udaipur earned its nickname, the “Venice of the East” because of its beautiful lakes and canals. During our visit, we were mesmerized by the shimmering waters of Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake. The Jag Mandir Palace and the Lake Palace which appear to float on the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola, a stunning example of Rajput architecture. The boat rides were unforgettable, offering a special way to experience the city’s beauty.
The next day of our Udaipur adventure, we delved into the vibrant bazaars that define the city’s charm. For future travellers, a visit to Bapu Bazaar is a must-do experience. Here, you’ll find everything from embroidered fabrics to intricate jewellery, ornate metalwork and traditional Rajasthani artefacts. As a group, we indulged in a delightful shopping spree. We found colourful textiles, beautiful jhumkas and handmade crafts in the market. It was a fun day of shopping, laughter and discovering hidden gems in the heart of Udaipur.
No trip to Udaipur would be complete without savouring its culinary delights. Tasting Dal-bati churma in Udaipur was a delicious experience. The Lentil curry, crispy bread and sweet flour mix made a heavenly combo. From exploring the narrow alleyways of the old city to indulging in sumptuous flavours of Rajasthan cuisine, every moment was a delightful adventure that left us craving for more. Don’t forget to sample Udaipur’s famous sweets including ghewar and imarti.
One of the highlights of our trip was our encounter with the gentle giants of India who roam freely through the streets- The sacred cows adorned with colourful garlands and bells.
With its timeless charm and warm hospitality, Udaipur captures the hearts and souls of every traveller. To anyone seeking an unforgettable travel experience filled with history, culture and beautiful lakes, I wholeheartedly invite you to join us for our next adventure and discover the royal charms of this city yourself!
