Sports education

Background

According to the Government guidelines for the academic curriculum, it is mandatory for all Indian students to have physical education classes for sports education. However, this is the reality only in big and well-off schools. Physical education ensures that the children learn important life values through play.

Challenge

Unfortunately, the local and slum schools are unable to provide physical and sports education due to the lack of funds, infrastructure and sports. As a result, students don’t get a chance to indulge in physical activities and tend to spare their energy in the classroom either distracting the lessons or fighting with each other.

SBB Intervention

To change this reality in small schools and poorer communities, STEP Beyond Borders works with volunteers from abroad good at sports and can devote their time for healthy sport classes with students. We believe that through sports students can become physically healthier thus ensuring their physical and mental well-being. Meanwhile, learning important values like leadership, team work, hard work and patience. Volunteers are welcome to teach martial arts, football, volleyball, badminton, running or a local sport played in their motherland. Rest assured, in return the volunteers will learn cricket from the kids who play it regularly on the streets of Jaipur.

In some cases when the volunteer is willing to work with a sports school (not a regular academic school) we can arrange classes there as well for more or less good players of specific sports.

    Main tasks of the volunteers:

  • Assessment of children’s interest and need in the provided resources
  •  Divide the groups age-wise and in few cases gender-wise, if required
  •  Engage all the group members into the sports learning process
  •  On the last day of the volunteering it’s suggested to organise either a match/game or a competition for the students to showcase what they learnt
  •  Enjoy and have fun with super excited and joyful beneficiaries
