Teaching at school

If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer abroad as a teacher and make a change in a small community in Jaipur, then our volunteer-supported school is the perfect option for you.

Background

We work in a rural area in Jaipur where nearly 85% of the population are village residents who moved to Jaipur in search of work. The adults work in factories of the neighbourhood, domestic helpers in high class households and drive rickshaws(tuk-tuk). The adults leave the children alone to go to work, hence the children are highly vulnerable to child labour, domestic labour and don’t go to school.

Challenge

Instead of paying for a child’s education, parents prefer their children mostly below 14 years of age to work with them and earn money. Many children of the neighbourhood work as mechanic assistants, cleaners and sellers in juice or tailor shops. Apart from them, the responsibility of domestic labour like fetching water and cleaning the house falls on their tiny shoulders.

SBB Intervention

To combat child labour and promote education in this are, with our partner NGO a community school has been established where education is free and parents pay only for books and uniform of the students. Since 2014, every year with limited resources the school provides for 70-80 students who study there till 8th standard. The school operates on donations and depends on volunteer work to enable good quality education. Volunteers are much needed to provide English knowledge to students. The children are away from toys, enjoyment and general children fantasies so with the volunteers they share their feelings, receive love and affection which makes them feel appreciated and loved.

    Main tasks of the volunteers:

  • Do assessment of children’s English
  •  Prepare lesson plans or follow the book lessons
  •  Teach communication skills to children
